Steampunk Kitchen Hood

Certain pieces of furniture or household appliances can completely transform the look and feel of a space. Incorporating a sculptural piece into your home or workplace is a way to enhance the living space. Here, a kitchen hood—usually seen as a simple functional object—becomes a true work of art.

Context

In a kitchen with a very special design, where countertops, doors, and drawers feature organic shapes, a standard kitchen hood was out of the question. By treating it as a sculptural object, it became the focal point of the space.

Intention

Transforming a utilitarian object into a central aesthetic element of a space goes beyond the realm of decoration. The object asserts itself within the space, taking on the role of a true organ—indispensable and irreplaceable—that harmonizes with the whole while asserting its uniqueness. The object confidently takes its place.

Creation

The kitchen hood echoes the kitchen’s curved lines. The choice of materials plays a key role: copper, with its noble and warm character, creates a color harmony with the red countertops, while zinc, by contrast, provides a material consistency with the cabinet door finishes. Finally, the reuse of an old semi-professional hood system and the customization of the entire unit—which are reminiscent of Jules Verne’s stories—reinforce the symbolic and functional depth of the object, rendering it timeless.

Symbolic Dimension

Beyond its technical function, the range hood becomes a sculptural, almost totemic presence. It embodies the idea that an everyday object can possess strong aesthetic value, resonating with the distinctive design of the existing kitchen furniture and a certain sense of imagination. Through its form and materials, it bridges function, artistic expression, and storytelling, giving the space a unique character where the act of cooking takes on a truly sensory dimension.
